Michael Jordan Is Still Dropping Buckets And Talking Trash

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmWYB73Yr8U

Although we will never see Michael Jordan play in the NBA again every now and then we’re blessed with small clips of the GOAT doing what he’s known best for, dropping buckets. Over the weekend, a clip of Michael Jordan playing a pickup basketball game with Tom Brady and Keegan Bradley surfaced.  MJ is seen knocking down his signature fadeway jumper while talking trash to his opponent. Jordan is clearly heard saying, “Hey man, you don’t have YouTube? You better put on Michael Jordan, for real.” At age 52, Michael Jordan may not be the best basketball player in the world anymore but he still might be one of the best trash talkers.

Source Sports Presents Fight Club: Who’s in and Who’s out?

What is the first rule about Fight Club? Say it with me, we don’t talk about fight club. This has been the golden rule in Hockey, NASCAR, and Baseball for years. These “rules’ have been in place since the beginning of their existence. Certain hockey players are placed on the roster just to be the “goons” or enforcers for their teammates. If there is a wreck on the racetrack, then someone is going to have to answer for it. Pitchers always have an issue with the time it takes a batter to round the bases after a home-run.  All these sports believe that intimidation through fighting is a necessary way to enforce the game. But what about the sports that don’t allow fights, that have regulations on brawls breaking out?

Second rule of fight club, WE DON’T TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB. The commissioners of both basketball and football  have placed rules and policies in order to have as little fighting as possible, from penalties on the field to suspensions, see the Malice at the Palace for example. Players seem to use different tacks in order to have toughness in these sports. Sometime it means just taking a technical foul to spark the team, or actually making a big play to cause the team to punt the ball. So this leaves and interesting question. Who’s in, and who’s out?

Why is it that there are sports in America that have borderline encouraged an boxing like atmosphere in their leagues, while others have a kindergarten mindset of “keep our hands to ourselves”.

Lets look at some possible factors. Money: According to articles from Fox Sports and ESPN, the NFL generates the most money and also is the most popular among American sport. Baseball is second followed by Basketball and Hockey, so is it just a matter money, and fighting has a relationship with lower profits? Culture: there is a mindset in hockey and Nascar that certain actions won’t be tolerated in the field of play? The problem with this theory is that the NBA had fighting all throughout the  80’s-90’s. Once the fighting really stopped is when the game got better. Race: Football and Basketball are clearly dominated by African-American players, while Nascar and Hockey have an extremely low African American involvement in comparison.  Baseball has had it’s lowest amount of black players on their teams in recent years. The problem with this theory is that black players do not affect fights in sports, all races of players do fight.

The answer seems to be that there is a clear yet unspoken line between who is in and who is out of the club, but is that good for business?  The rules show that sports such as hockey and baseball are following suit to try and limit the amount of fights in their games. If Nascar wants to follow the trend, it might actually put a lock on the club all together

Student Loses Scholarship To FSU As Investigation Into Kendrick Johnson’s Death Continues

U.S. Department of Justice grand jury is investigating Kendrick Johnson’s death

Brian Bell, a highly recruited linebacker at Lowndes County High School in Valdosta, Georgia, had his scholarship revoked by Florida State University pending a federal investigation into the death of 17 year old Kendrick Johnson in 2013 in the school gymnasium.

While not yet named a suspect in the death of Kendrick Johnson, federal investigators have found enough reason to investigate 17 year old Bell, his brother Brandon and their father, FBI Agent Rick Bell; all named in the wrongful death lawsuit that was filed by Johnson’s parents, Kenneth and Jackie Johnson.

Johnson, also 17, was found dead in the high school gymnasium on January 10, 2013. His body was found rolled up in a cheerleading mat. A multiple sports player, Johnson was a hurdler, small forward on the basketball court, and a safety that could hit like any linebacker, but his promising career was cut short in what his parents say was murder.

What happened the day Kendrick Johnson died is unsure, however, the suit alleges Rick encouraged his two sons to assault Johnson. The suit states a white female classmate lured Johnson into an unnamed location of the school where he was fatally beaten by both Bell brothers and one other student. It goes on to say Johnson’s body was put inside the gym mat, where it was found the next morning when a student climbed on top of the vertically standing mats and saw two feet. The high school’s head athletic trainer Philip Pielow pushed the mats down onto their sides and Johnson’s lifeless body rolled out of one of them along with vomit and blood.

Two years prior in 2011, Kendrick and Brian had gotten into a fight on the school bus when the football team was heading home from an away game. The suit states Brandon, the older Bell brother told Johnson “It ain’t over,” referring to the fight.

Randy McPherson, the high school football coach at Lowndes released a statement to the Valdosta Daily Times saying,

“Last Wednesday morning Coach Jimbo Fisher told me that the FSU Athletic Director and the president would not let him give Brian Bell a scholarship. We went to meet with the FSU president the next day. The next morning, Jimbo called me that they still were not going to let him give Brian a scholarship.”

Grantland, a popular sports and pop culture blog written by expert writer and sports journalist Bill Simmons published an in-depth story in 2013 that highlights all accounts involving the case including the inconsistencies and mysterious circumstances that surround Johnson’s death.
