The Things We Learn in Sports

Things we learn in sports this week

Sports tend to shed light on situations on our society that would otherwise go unheard. Sports are offended used as a jumping point to have discussions about major topics. This week in sports a a light is shine on the things that can happen when expectations are meet, and when distraction come about. Life is not about chances, but rather choices. This idea highlights the Things We Learned in Sports this week.

7) Stephen Curry dances on stage with Rapper Lecrae

This has to be Steph Curry’s 10th time on this list, but when it’s your time, it’s just your time. The Golden State Warriors’ superstar was able to get on stage with the Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae as he performed the song “I’m Turnt.” Curry wound up in front of the crowd, but he began as a part of it.

6) Kelvin Benjamin’s injury cripples the Panthers’ season

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin will miss the entire 2015 season with a torn ACL. Benjamin was making a cut in a joint practice with the Miami Dolphins where the injury occurred.

Benjamin was coming off a great rookie year where he had 78 receptions and over a thousand yard receiving. This a crushing blow for a team that only won 7 games last season but won a division title. , it will be  Replace a guy like Benjamin is nearly impossile because he basically is there only wide receiver on the team. We can hear Cam Newton’s fantasy draft stock falling from way over here.

5) Iman Shumpert is still rapping

Cleveland Cavilers guard Iman Shumpert is back on the beat. Now for some reason Shumpert gets more pup about rapping then another NBA player who is just straight up better than him, Dame Dollar. Yet the Shumpert seems to just working to get on the level that classic NBA level that Shaq  reached back in the 90’s. Shumpert’s new song  290 West talks about the struggles of the fame that he receives. Not that Shumpert signed a 40 million dollar contract extension with Cleveland and his girlfriend is Teyana Taylor. Seems likes he’s has a lot of problems. Listen to the song below.

4) Sammy just styling on them

The Bills have everything a team would need to get to the Super Bowl. Great defense, outstanding weapons on offense, and an experience head coach. Now if the NFL would have them drag a jug machine out there to throw the ball, then the Bills might have a chance. The Bills are having an interesting time trying to decide who will be throwing the ball to star receiver Sammy Watkins. Watkins looks to be getting prepared for whoever is throwing it his way.

3) Madden released the weirdest movie trailer of All-time

On Friday, the folks over at EA Sports dropped a bizarre, hilarious and utterly insane trailer for this season’s installation of the Madden franchise.

Starring the likes of Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, a beautifully mustached Rob Gronkowski, a pissed off Rex Ryan, a bowler hat-wearing Antonio Brown, a plane-diving Julio Jones and, perhaps most impressively, an Al Pacino-impersonating Colin Kaepernick (“Whoo-ah!).

2) Usian Bolt is still really really fast

Usain Bolt narrowly beat rival Justin Gatlin to the gold medal in the 100-metre final of the IAAF World Championships on Sunday, finishing the race with his best time of the season: 9.79 seconds. Gatlin seemed to hold his lead until the final 15 metres, when Bolt shifted gears and beat his rival on the line. This was the first time that the American was favored to defeat the fast man in the world, but some believe wasn’t able to live up to that pressure. Watch the race and try not to blink.

1) When is the line drawn

According to reports, A judge in McLennan County, Texas, sentenced former Baylor and Boise State defensive end Sam Ukwuachu to 180 days in county jail Friday after the 22-year-old was found guilty of second-degree sexual assault from an October 2013 incident. According to ESPN’s Max Olson  Ukwuachu will also be placed on a 10-year probation. As disgusting as this story is, it seems as if the situation could have been avoided.

A report on Thursday by Jessica Luther and Dan Solomon for Texas Monthly. Luther and Solomon detailed the sexual assault allegations leveled against Ukwuachu by a former member of the Baylor women’s soccer team, stemming from an Oct. 19, 2013, incident. Ukwuachu was subsequently indicted June 25, 2014.

Art Briles

But now the conversation has shifted to who should take the blame. Ukwuachu’s former head coach Chris Peterson says that he informed Baylor Head coach Art Briles of his troubled past. “After Sam Ukwuachu was dismissed from the Boise State football program and expressed an interest in transferring to Baylor, I initiated a call with coach Art Briles,” Petersen said in the statement. “In that conversation, I thoroughly apprised Coach Briles of the circumstances surrounding Sam’s disciplinary record and dismissal.” Now Briles has refuted those comments, saying that it simply wasn’t discussed.

The Things We Learn in Sports

Preseason football headlines the week of sports, and it couldn’t come at a better time. We are all desperate to just have a crumble of football back in our lives that we watch and see guys that will be cut in a few short weeks play on the field. A review of a few preseason moments highlights The Thing We Learned in Sports.

7) Rookies make their season debuts

Top two pick in the 2015 NFL draft Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were in action over the week. As expected both players struggled in the opening of their NFL careers. Maroita had two turnovers, one which was returned for a touchdown, and Winston threw an interception. However both players were able to rebound and lead their teams on touchdown drives. It’s the preseason so not too much can be read into both players’ performances; however, their coaches must love their ability to bounce back from rough starts.  Watch the top QB’s in the videos below

6) Trent Richardson can’t seem to find the hole
You remember Trent Richardson right; he’s the guy that people draft in fantasy football only to have him do nothing all season. Well if this clip isn’t enough to prove that he isn’t a player that should be high on any draft boards. Now with the Oakland Raiders, Richardson doesn’t seem to have the ideas to be an elite NFL running back. It just looks really bad for Richardson on this play.

5) LeBron is giving back

 Lebron James

We tend to always mock athletes who just seem to have all this money, but don’t seem willing to do anything meaningful with it. LeBron James is attempting to buck that trend. James, the four-time NBA MVP and two-time NBA champion, is ready to give thousands of children a college education. According to Forbes, The LeBron James Family Foundation and the University of Akron will fund full scholarships for students who complete the foundation’s academic program, which James has been sponsoring for five years. James’ foundation will cover tuition starting in 2021 when this year’s crop of seventh graders graduate high school.

4) Philip Rivers and Chargers get contract done.

The Chargers and quarterback Philip Rivers inked a new deal late Saturday night. The 5-time pro bowler will likely end his career in San Diego, or Los Angeles if the team moves. The deal is for 4 years, $84 million with $65 million in guaranteed money, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Reports were that if a deal was not completed that the Chargers were going to place the franchise tag on Rivers, according to NFL network’s Ian Rapoport (via NFL Media PR).

 3) Tebow is back…..sorta

The Philadelphia Eagles played the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The Eagles won the game 36-10, but the real story was able about Tim Tebow. Tebow scored a rushing touchdown when he keep the ball on a read-option play, and ran in from the 7-yard line. Tebow has been out of the NFL  for 2 seasons and is desperately trying to make the Eagles’ squad. A play like this might be able to keep him on the roster for a few more weeks.

2) Met’s Center Fielder has a cannon

For one night, baseball was cool. New York Mets’ CF Yoenis Cespedes made it happen on Saturday night. Cespedes was acquired from the Tigers at the trading deadline, and has changed life for his new team. On Saturday night, the National League found out that you don’t test this man. Watch as Cespedes guns down the base runner.

1) Mama said knock you out.

It seems like no matter what they do their will be a way for the Jets to screw something up. Starting QB Geno Smith had his jaw broken earlier this week by former teammate LB Ik Enemkpali, now on the Buffalo Bills. Smith will miss 6-10 weeks with the injury and may not reclaim his starting job once he is fully healed.  According to Bleacher Report’s Tyler Conway, Smith returned to throwing over the weekend—just not yet with his teammates. Smith was seen tossing a football in the parking lot of his apartment complex in New Jersey, two days after undergoing surgery for a broken jaw. It is sad to believe that this situation all started from a 600 dollars.

LeBron James Debuts Nike LeBron Soldier 9 ‘USA” PE

LBJ Debuts some fire at the USA Basketball Mini-Camp

LeBron James is currently at USA Basketball mini-camp and he made his first appearance today at practice rocking  a new pair of Lebron’s contrasted within the patriotic color theme. The shoes are decked out in red, white and blue with a signature snapping. The shoes are predominately featured in a white base with obsidian strapping with red throughout the shoe. The shoes are defintely fire and there is no word if these will hit shelves but we will keep you posted here. We will also keep you in tune with more breakout heat from the USA Basketball Men’s team. Check out more images of the Nike Lebron Soldier 9 “USA” PE below.

Nike and James Harden Will Reportedly Go Their Separate Ways

James Harden will not re-up with Nike

According to sources, Nike will not top the $200 million deal that Harden was offered from Adidas. TMZ reports that Nike was concerned with the prospect of giving that much money to one player, and what it would mean to other up-and-coming superstars looking to get a similar deal. ESPN’s sports business reporter Darren Rovell questions why Adidas would offer Harden such a large contract.

Harden has yet to officially sign his deal with Adidas, but the writing is on the wall–or Khloe Kardashian’s back. She was spotted sporting Adidas gear at Harden’s Drew League game this weekend. Over the past few weeks, the two have been involved in fervent relationship rumors.

Khole Kardashian

Since it appears that Nike and Harden won’t be signing on the dotted lines, Harden’s deal with Adidas is likely all but sealed.

The Things We Learn in Sports

Everything in life is temporary. From houses, cloths, cars, everything in life can be replaced. Athletes seem to be a group of people who still can’t understand this concept. Not matter how good the player, there will always be someone to take that spot away from them. Along with contracts being signed and fights in dugouts,  The Things We Learn in Sports this week deals with the idea that no is above being replaced.

7. Nick Foles and Rams agree to a new deal

Nick Foles and the Rams agreed to a two-year extension on Friday. Ian Rapoport is reporting that the deal with worth 24 million.

Foles, 26, arrived in St. Louis this offseason via a trade from Philadelphia that sent Sam Bradford the other way. Foles spent his first three NFL seasons with the Eagles, experiencing largely up-and-down affairs that saw him look like a franchise quarterback one moment and borderline unplayable the next.

This basically gives Foles 2-years to prove that be can back to his 2013 form where he was a Pro-Bowl player.

6. Percy Harvin clears the air about the Seahawks situation.

Percy Harvin signed a 1-year deal with the Buffalo Bills this past offseason, and is trying to prove that he is still that elite player in this league. Harvin was a guest on ESPN’s First Take and address the situation that had the Super Bowl champion Seahawks trade him to the New York Jets. Harvin said that he had a problems with members of the receiving core. When he brought those problems to head coach Pete Carroll, Harvin says that he’s concerns weren’t heard. Watch as Harvin explains the situation in the video below.

5. Marshawn Lynch jokes about Super Bowl play on the “League”

Marshawn Lynch makes an appearance on the wildly popular show the “League”. Lynch plays himself, and makes fun of the situation that has been the biggest joke of the season. The episode, which will air September 9, features the running back hanging out on the beach as a business member of “Taco Corp.” along with a character named Taco MacArthur. Another dude, who’s Taco’s brother on the show, asks for a beer, and Lynch’s fellow bigwig insists on throwing it.“Just hand it to me,” Beast Mode begs. “No need to throw it, man. C’mon. … I could sleepwalk that thing to him, boy.” Then madness ensues. They should have just ran the ball.

4. It was all good just a week ago.

Seems like if you have a problem with a team or a player in the league, the place to go is on First Take. Brandon Marshall was traded from the Chicago Bears to the New York Jets in the offseason. Due to injuries, Marshall had a down season and , to his own admission, believe people are counting him out. The All-Pro receiver sat down at the debate desk where he explained the situation between him and Jay Cutler and his expecting for the season.

3. Tempers flare in Detroit

There’s rarely a time where baseball enters the The Things We Learn in Sports, unless it involves fights. The Detroit Tigers have traded away their second and third best players in David Price and Yoenis Cespedes, at the trade deadline, which indicated to their fans that they are in rebuilding mode. That means another 2 months of meaning less baseball. Usually the anger is directed at opponents, but Tigers teammates James McCann and Jose Iglesias went at each other in the dugout Friday night at Comerica Park. Watch the fight below.

2. A College football player is killed by police

Christian Taylor was shot and killed during a struggle after the unarmed 19-year-old crashed a car through the front window of a car dealership, authorities said per NBC.com. Taylor was a sophomore at Angelo State University in San Angelo. Officers were responding to a burglary call about 1 a.m. Friday in Arlington when they discovered someone had driven a vehicle through a front. Clearly some have voiced their outrage towards this situation.

More information will soon come alone.

1. Aldon Smith released by 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers release linebacker  Aldon Smith after he was arrested on accusations of, hit and run, DUI, and vandalism. This is the third time that the pro-bowl player has been arrested for and alcohol related incident. Smith was coming off a season where he was already suspended for 9 games because of off the field issues. Smith has a long road back if he wants to play football again.
