Apple’s iOS 9 Features New Emojis, Including the Middle Finger

Update (Sept. 17): The new emojis are only available to Beta users, as it will be part of the iOS 9.1 update. The link to become a beta user and get it now is here

Gone are the days of archaic emoticons, using a colon for eyes and parenthesis for a mouth. “emojis” have become a staple in modern day conversation. Where one word, or phrase have been used to describe a feeling, activity, etc. emojis have replaced them — but only to a certain degree.

After several updates and additions, including an multiracial skin tone modifier, the emoji faithful continue to gripe about the lack of several obvious additions. This has lead to some improvisational uses for existing emojis (cactus as a middle finger, and eggplant as…well you know.)

Now Apple will welcome over 250 new emojis, including an eye rolling smiley, a mortorcycle, several nation’s flags and finally, the middle finger.

The new emojis are available right now for those who update to iOS 9.1 Beta, exclusively available for Apple users who have signed up for their Beta program which you can apply to here. The Beta program also includes the forthcoming OS X “El Capitan” operating system for Macbook users, ahead of its September 30 launch date. The official iOS 9 update is also now available for iPhone and iPad which will feature the new emojis as well.

Downloading the official iOS 9 update is simple:

Go to Settings > General > Software Update, then follow the on screen prompts.

Check out some of the new emojis above and the other features you can expect from iOS9 here.

So This Is How Tyga Was Able To Afford That $320,000 Ferrari For Kylie Jenner!

Tyga has been in the news quite a bit lately. From his friendship with Kylie Jenner, a recently released album, cameo in the film “Dope,” as well as a brand new reality show on MTV2,  the young rapper stays in the headlines and on the screen. His most recent siting on the web was for the $320,000 Ferrari he purchased for Kylie on her 18th birthday. Many we’re left scratching their heads as to how he could afford such a gift, given he was also rumored to be going through some financial problems.

Well, wonder no more, as it is now being revealed that Tyga has signed a very lucrative deal with Tunes Audio, a well established OEM and ODM manufacturer of in-ear monitors for many well known brands. Signed on August 9th, the deal is worth a staggering $10 Million, making the “Rack City” rapper a part owner of the company.

Having been in business for over two decades, Tunes Audio is known for hand molding countless amounts of in-ears for audiophiles, the hearing impaired, and has been used on stages by some of the most famous musical artists worldwide.

We are really excited about signing a multi dollar deal with the young star. Not only is Tyga is a trendsetter and a driver of the culture, but he’s also a businessman. We look forward to building this company together. This is just the beginning.

Boasting a social media footprint of over 27 Million followers, Tyga is definitely one of the most visible artists in music. He too shared a statement.

I saw what TUNES was doing in the audio world so when they said they wanted to start making headphones, we partnered up.Only boss moves here.

So with all of the hoopla surrounding Tyga’s time in the headlines in the past year, it has definitely paid dividends.

Drone Drops Package Of Drugs Into Ohio Prison Yard

A drone containing small amounts of marijuana, heroin and tobacco causes a fight at an Ohio prison

In the latest in series of attempts to deliver prison contraband via drones, a package was delivered to an Ohio prison yard causing quite a stir.

According to officials, the package was delivered to Mansfield Correctional Institution on July 29th and contained marijuana, heroin and tobacco in a box. More than 100 inmates were in the yard upon delivery causing a fight to break out. No inmates or staff were hurt, however, Nine prisoners who were involved in the fight were placed in solitary confinement.

This isn’t the first incident where a drone has attempted a contraband delivery. In South Carolina, police say that a drone was recently sent to deliver phones, drugs and tobacco into the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville. Last year, four people were arrested in Morgan, GA after a corrections officer at Calhoun State Prison saw a small remote-controlled helicopter hovering over the prison yard attempting to deliver over one pound of rolled up tobacco.

Peter Singer, author of Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century, stated;

As the technology spreads, these kinds of things are going to become more and more common.”

Cybersecurity Firm ZeroFox Classifies #BlackLivesMatter Organizers As Security Threat

In a released report ZeroFox aimed to identify cyber security and public safety threats to monitor rioting in Baltimore after resident Freddie Gray’s death in police custody

Baltimore cyber startup ZeroFox is facing backlash via social media after the public release of a report released last Wednesday, in which the company singled out protest organizers of the “Black Lives Matter” movement as threats to the security of the city of Baltimore during April’s riots.

So•cial |Me•di•a | Risk | Man•age•ment
/‘sōSHəl/ / mee-dee-uh/ / ’risk/ /’ma-nij-mənt/
1. The process of mitigating or eliminating organizational hazards posed by social media through conducting proactive reconnaissance, continuous monitoring for fraud and cyber attacks and safeguarding social assets against compromise and compliance violations.

The report names specific Twitter users, including two high profile organizers of Black Lives Matter and details the level of threat each of them poses to the city. The report and email communication between ZeroFox and city officials with the subject line:

IMMEDIATE CALL to ACTION: ZeroFOX needs to help Baltimore City ASAP.”

It was released at the end of July through Freedom of Information Act requests by the Baltimore Sun and CityExplainer, an online journalism project by former Sun reporter Gus Sentementes.

The site claims to offer social media risk management and identifies DeRay McKesson and Johnetta Elzie as “threat actors” for whom “immediate response is recommended”. It also describes McKesson and Elzie as “high” severity, “physical” and “#mostwanted” threats due to their “massive following” on social media.

So why are Black Lives Matter organizers highly monitored and labeled threat actors, but Ku Klux Klan members are free to protest without even being considered a threat?

Here’s What We Took Away From Apple’s WWDC ’15 Presentation

On Monday, Apple provide us with a lot to look forward to in the near future at the 2015 Worldwide Developers Conference. Between the technology behemoth’s upcoming “Apple Music” service, which will be their forray into the music streaming world, as well as what we can expect from their upcoming iOS 9 and OSX El Capitan operating systems.

Apple Music

The biggest takeaway from this year’s WWDC was Apple’s forthcoming music streaming service, Apple Music. The iTunes-powered service is looking jump straight into the fiery competition between heavy weight contenders, Spotify and Pandora, as well as the JAY Z-backed, “new kid on the block”, Tidal. While the service doesn’t exactly offer anything we haven’t seen before as of yet, it’s aiming to do it the best — and on a platform that most are probably already familiar with.

With a release date of June 30, Apple Music boasts a 30 million song catalog, with recommendations that aren’t based on algorithms or otherwise computer generated but by actual music experts, to help make the expansive catalog more traversable. According to Seattle Pi, “an Apple spokeswoman said the company has signed deals with the three major record labels, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group, along with independent labels,” so you can expect some familiar names in the mix, as well as several new ones.

Apple Music will also feature “Connect” which will allow artists — both signed and unsigned — to share music and possibly more directly to their fans, adding a level of interactivity and intimacy that is largely unseen on other platforms.

iTunes Radio will become “Apple Radio” within Apple Music, which will also offer curated recommendations from experts, as well as “Beats1”, Apple’s new 24-hour Internet radio station. Beats1 will broadcast in over 100 countries, and feature programing from three DJs, Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden, and Julie Adenuga.

Apple Music subscriptions will run $9.99 per month for one user, and $14.99 for the family pass which provides the service to up to six users.

Operating Systems

  • OS X 10.11: El Capitan

Mac’s OS X Yosemite operating system will receive an upgrade this fall with the upcoming OS X El Capitan. A major feature of the forthcoming OS is its ADD-inducing Split View mode, allowing users to work with two apps, side by side, simultaneously. The Notes app will be improved with the ability to support pictures, video, drawings, interactive checklists and even maps, accessible across all of a user’s Apple devices. Also the Maps app will receive a needed upgrade, providing public transportation directions based on your arrival time which you can port directly to your iPhone. Couple all of that with the uber-helpful ability to mute all of your tabs in Safari as well as nifty new Trackpad gestures — one in particular allows you to find your mouse cursor by shaking it — and El Capitan is shaping up to be a welcomed improvement on the Mac interface.

  • iOS 9

iOS 9’s improvements will largely be major updates to Siri, making the voice assistant more proactive. For example, it will keep track of all things that pertain to you, such as flight information, on it’s own. Additionally, if you check your Twitter feed first thing in the morning, Siri will know and offer to show you it upon wake up, and it will be ever-ready with a simple swipe of your home screen. A “Now Playing” menu will also pop up on your iPhone’s lock screen upon plugging your headphones into the device, and when you receive a call from an unknown number Siri will scour your emails to attempt to identify the contact.

iOS 9’s refinements are best seen on iPads, as it they will practically turn the tablet device into a mini laptop, oppose to just an oversized iPhone. Similar to OS X El Capitan, iPad will receive Split View for apps, which can be adjusted between a half and half to 70-30 split, with both apps fully functional simultaneously. Additionally, images can be dragged from one half to the other; this feature is exclusive to the iPad Air 2. Older iPad models, however,  will receive “Slide Over” which allows users to quickly switch between apps with a slide gesture, as well as a video player that allows videos to be played in the corner of your screen no matter what app you’re on (including FaceTime calls and HBO Now).

Healthkit will receive updates such as hydration monitoring, menstrual periods, reproductive health measurmeents, and UV exposure, while Homekit will upgrade with controls for your window shades, thermostats, lights and sensors according to CNN Money.

With all of  these announcements, Apple is looking as formidable as ever to wage war against competitors across the board. We look forward to seeing how this plays out.

Those interested in beta testing Apple’s iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan, if you’re willing to fork over $99 you can join Apple’s New Developer Program here.

Finally: Apple Adds Menstual Cycle Tracker for iPhone

After side eyes from women due to Apple’s lack of health related features for the ladies, the tech giant has answered the call, adding a Menstual cycle tracker to its Health app. Dubbed “Reproductive Tracking,” the feature will be available on Apple’s iOS 9 update.

Although there are dozens of period and ovulation tracking apps available, Apple’s new feature will automatically be added to the Health app, right next to the step count, and other medical and exercise information. They’re also adding information about how much time you spend sitting down and your exposure to ultraviolet rays.

Ladies, are you excited about the new feature?

Study Shows No Slowdown In Global Warming

With record low temperatures during the start of summer 2015, climatic change and global warming are the current hot topics up for debate

A new climate study was released Thursday that refutes the claim that there’s been a slowdown in the Earth’s warming rate and it has caused quite a stir. There is no denying that the planet is changing just based on the weather patterns; 10 years ago, we would not be wearing coats at the beginning of June in cities like NYC and Chicago. The effects of toxic chemicals in the earth’s atmosphere are now evident to the average person not just the scientists who have been researching climate change for several decades.

A new study published by Science Magazine finds that the rate of global warming during the last 15 years has been as fast as or faster than that seen during the latter half of the 20th Century. The study refutes the notion that there has been a slowdown or “hiatus” in the rate of global warming in recent years. The Drudge Report chose to play up the views of notable global warming skeptic Christopher Monckton on Thursday, the day a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration NOAA study was released questioning the belief that the Earth’s warming trend has been interrupted since 1998.

Despite an overwhelming consensus among scientists that the Earth is warming at an alarming rate, critics Thursday accused the researchers of covering up facts to mislead the public. A team of scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information and others say the way ocean temperatures have been measured has masked the rate of global warming. Thomas R. Karl, NCEI director said in a statement Thursday,

Adding in the last two years of global surface temperature data and other improvements in the quality of the observed record provide evidence that contradict the notion of a hiatus in recent global warming trends. The rate of warming over the first 15 years of this century has, in fact, been as fast or faster than that seen over the last half of the 20th century.”

The Industrial Revolution, although a great advancement in technology, was not a plan for future generations and sustainable development was not in mind. The oceanic life and animals around the globe are not able to adapt to the rapid changes that are occurring and the effects are more evident now more than ever. Celebrities should take artist Akon‘s lead and invest in building sustainable energy, as he just recently announced on the UN floor that he will open a Solar Academy to aide in supplying 600 million Africans electricity that are currently without it. It is long over due that conversations about solar power, green-energy, and cleaner technology efforts become a reality or the world better start preparing to wear radiation suits and gas masks in the very near future.
