#CruiseControl: Stream Lovel’s Latest EP “Backseat Memories”

R&B has turned from strictly baby making odes, to unrequited love, into the complete 180 degree turn of the anti-love song. However, contemporarily, the genre has become a musical blank canvas where artists can blend their influences and experiment with sounds and subject matter. With his latest release, Backseat Memories, Harlem based crooner LoVel capitalizes on the current climate of R&B.

LoVel uses his sultry falsetto as a vehicle to transcend listeners from the no-strings-attached attitude of summertime into the first rounds of cuffing season. And the stand-out anthem of this season is the seductive “Me Too”, which serenades his shorty’s mind as well as her curves.  “The Calling” is a another refreshing glimpse into LoVel’s sound. The uptempo track–with it’s echoing production–doesn’t play like anything else in heavy rotation yet, immediately makes the listener feel as though it should be the recipient of heavy spins.

Within the roster of other R&B artists, consider LoVel somewhere between the guy all too thirsty for multiple dances after buying you a single drink and that other guy, who spent the night reminding you that “these hoes ain’t loyal.”  Throughout Backseat Memories, the theme of youth’s reckless abandon over trance-y beats with sexy baselines, connects the listener to the signature sound of LoVel; this paired with the fact that there are only two features on it’s entirety, allows fans to familiarize with the artist, in a really organic way.

#MusicMondays: J Blak x Bou Premiere Their Latest Single “Side B*tch”

Hailing from Silver Spring, MD, 23 year old rapper, Bou is here to deliver his latest club thumpin single, “Side B*tch”.

Innovative beats are his forte, considering his extensive percussion skills, however, an interesting turn of events quickly ignited his passion for artistry.  Shortly after graduating high school, Bou was accepted to Howard University, and during his freshman year went through a law enforcement incident which resulted in him being on house arrest for five months.  Being socially limited due to his 5 p.m. curfew, his friend Jason Harris (aka JHarissBeats) would visit, hang out and play a variety of his beats.  On one particular occassion, Bou requested some production from his friend via email and it was history from there.  The rap artist was born.

A few short months after his initial inspiration, Bou released his first mixtape, Rough Draft, in 2012. From this platform, he began to pursue his career in rap. With positive feedback and support from his community, Bou released his second mixtape, Thesis, in 2013. Since catching the attention of listeners, Bou has created a buzz in the DMV Hip-Hop community.

Bou counts Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Fabolous, T.I., and J. Cole as his musical inspirations. He was also heavily influenced by up and coming local rapper and childhood friend Frank Diggy, who was murdered in late 2012. Bou describes his music as “raw rap, authentic, and from the heart.” He raps about his life experiences in the streets in combination with what he has learned in the classroom.

Quazelle Returns to Music With His Latest Single “Motives” Feat. Spoon Dollaz (Prod. by Fayo & Chill)

On September 4th, Pennsylvania rapper Quazelle announced the release of new material after a long hiatus, by tweeting “It’s been close to 2 years since I last released any music, but I’m ready to give ya’ll some new sounds today!” As optimistic as that tweet may sound, the subject matter on the newest track hints that his time off could have been a period of reevaluating trust.

“Motives”,which features Spoon Dollaz, tells the story of a man fed up with people’s shady intentions. Over an eerie beat (produced by Fayo & Chill) that’s part opening credits of an 80’s horror movie and part chilly synthesizer simplicity, Quazelle warns his “sometimes” acquaintances that he peeps game:  “I’m busy, now they wanna make time for me. Tell me they love me but, they lyin’ to me…I’m a man now. So many more things that I understand now.”

If this earlier tweet was the informal announcement of Quazelle’s return, then consider “Motives” his official kick-off anthem. And for all those who still have their hand out, consider this your eviction notice.

Presha J Announces ‘Traveller’s Guide’ EP & Debuts ‘Live For You’ Visual

It’s been two long years since British Hip Hop artist Presha J released his last single ‘Throw It In The Air’, and nearly a decade since his debut EP, Changes, was released in 2008. After taking time away from music for life and to start a family, the London native is proud to be back, with the announcement of his sophomore EP, Traveller’s Guide, which is to be released on October 23 via Writeway Music.

Leading Presha J’s triumphant, no holds barred, return to the music landscape is new single ‘Live For You’ featuring emerging singer-songwriter Leke, and produced by Smylee (Victizzle, Faith Child). Accompanied by thematic and abstract visuals directed by Dvisionaiir, ‘Live For You’ is an upbeat, inspiration and life-affirming opus, backed by thumping drums, an infectious bassline and heavy synths, over which Presha J waxes lyrical about standing firm in his faith.

Speaking about his departure from music, Presha J confesses, “I never meant for there to be such a gap in between my work. I was still creating music while I was planning to get married but I felt that God had other plans and I quickly learned that something had to give”, adding about his new EP that, “I’ve grown up a lot since ‘Changes’, which was more about my testimony. I wanted this new project to take my listeners on a trip from a more mature viewpoint”.

With support from Channel AKA, Capital Xtra, Bang Radio, Kiss TV and Smash Hits TV, early in his career, plus rave reviews and critical acclaim for his Changes EP, Presha J had been hailed as one of the finest and most promising Hip Hop artists in the UK. This comeback record Traveller’s Guide is poised to solidify that early promise and acclaim from years ago, starting with the exciting new offering ‘Live For You’.

#PeepTheVisual: Lex Lavo Presents “Consignment” Dir. By A1Vision

Spanish Harlem’s own, Lex Lavo, toasts to his come-up and continues puttin’ in work in his cinematic new video for “Consignment,” the latest single off his bubbling summer release, The Voice EP.

As anyone who’s heard the EP already will tell you, the rising 25-year-old MC delivers effortless, confident bars over producer High Volume’s trunk-rattler of a beat, and in the video, it all  sets the tone for crisp, beautifully shot visuals handled by A1Vision (aka photographer/videographer Bryan Nunez). Lavo and his crew’s approach makes this feel more like a mini-movie than your standard music video, particularly the nods to his lyrics about everything from getting hooked up with a free sandwich to keeping one eye glued to the police presence in the stone jungle.

Given the way the vivid clip concludes, you get the feeling that there’s more to come from Lex Lavo, who clearly has his own story to tell. Until we get that, though, you can enjoy the “Consignment” video by hitting the play button above,  and circle back to his previous drop, “My Set,” which features Shelby Ellimac on the hook.
